OpenAI Wants to Certify 10M People. Not the Cert You Need.

OpenAI committed $1 billion to certify 10 million Americans by 2030. Partners include Walmart, John Deere, Lowe’s, BCG, and Accenture.

It’s impressive. It’s also the wrong certification for anyone trying to actually deploy AI in their business.

Google has one. Microsoft has several. EC-Council launched four new credentials. The White House tied federal contracts to mandatory AI training. AWS is targeting 100,000 learners globally.

Everyone is building AI certifications. Nobody is building the one that matters for operators.

Here’s what every program has in common: they certify tool knowledge. OpenAI’s cert proves you understand ChatGPT. Microsoft’s proves you can configure Azure AI. They answer “do you know what this tool does?”

They don’t answer the question that actually matters: “can you deploy AI in a real business, with real constraints, in a way that produces measurable results?”

That’s a fundamentally different skill. Knowing how a model works doesn’t tell you which workflow to automate first. Passing a vendor cert doesn’t prepare you for the moment an AI tool hallucinates a customer’s billing information and you have to explain it to a client.

A vendor certification is like getting a driver’s license.

It proves you can operate the vehicle. It says nothing about whether you can navigate to a specific destination in traffic, weather, and construction.

I’ve talked to operators with three, four, five AI certifications who still can’t deploy a single working AI workflow in their business. They know the theory. They know the tools. They don’t have the implementation knowledge that connects “I understand this” to “this is running in my business saving us 20 hours a week.”

The certification the market needs is role-specific and business-context-specific. An SMB operator needs different knowledge than an enterprise developer.

The cert isn’t the capability. The capability is the cert.
